Wreck-It-Ralph to Feature Licensed Video Game Characters

Wreck-It-Ralph is an upcoming film by Disney that explores the lives’ of video game characters. When I first heard about the movie, I thought it was just going to be a lame attempt by Disney to attract the male demographic. After seeing the trailer for the movie, however, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised.

The story of Wreck-It-Ralph is actually pretty clever. Ralph is the villain of an arcade game called Fix-It Felix Jr.(a game quite similar to Donkey Kong), in which the player must fix buildings that Ralph goes around destroying. He has been doing this for 30 years, and he’s sick and tired of being the bad guy. Ralph decides to prove that he can be a good guy by leaving his game to go to other games in the arcade. Of course, his adventure is bound to be full of laughs, mishaps, and tons of references to video game culture.

What really blew my mind away about this trailer wasn’t so the story, but rather the appearance of licenced video game characters. We can see Bowser, Eggman, Zangief, and the orange ghost from Pac-Man. I literally did a double take when they appeared on screen! The fact that Disney went out of their way to pay Nintendo, Capcom, and Namco just so these character could make an appearance shows how committed they are to making a good movie. Either that, or they’re just desperate to make sure the movie sells.

Of course, it’s a little too early to say whether or not Wreck-It-Ralph will be a hit. Currently, it’s slated to be released on November 2nd this year. Wreck-It-Ralph will feature the voice talents of comedians John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer and Sarah Silverman, so it may end up being quite funny. With an interesting story and appearances by popular video game characters, Wreck-It-Ralph may end up being this generation’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
