E3 2012 Tomb Raider Trailer: Release Date Revealed and Much More!

E3 may be only a few days away, but that hasn’t stopped Crystal Dynamics from releasing a new trailer for Tomb Raider a little early. Not only does it reveal the much sought release date for the game, but it also reveals some stunning gameplay and story elements as well.

Some brand new gameplay is shown throughout the trailer. Lara Croft is shown killing a deer with a bow, climbing a plane crashed on a waterfall, and fending off a wolf. Lara is even shown shooting a few bad guys with a gun; much like the old Lara we know so well.

As last year’s E3 showed us, the new Tomb Raider game is a reboot that focuses on the origins of Lara Croft. Our heroine is ship wrecked on some unknown island and must find a way home. The new trailer delves into some of the plot elements of the story which previously weren’t mentioned.

Lara Croft is shown waking up in a cave and barely escaping the dangers that lurk within it. She later meets up with some of her friends before being kidnapped by an unknown organization. Finally we see her making her escape, but not before struggling with her captors and killing them. Not much else is known at the moment, which makes the wait a bit more unbearable!

One complaint I’ve seen people have is the new personality of Lara Croft. She is shown as an inexperienced, frightened girl in the trailer rather than the tough, bold women we are familiar with. It is apparent that Lara has some grit though, and there’s definitely room for character development. This is an origin story after all and like the game’s slogan says, “A Survivor is Born”.

Personally, I am very excited for this game. It looks like it is shaping up to be quite the adventure! The new dark, and gritty direction the series is taking may be what the franchise needs to become relevant again. Lara may be much younger and inexperienced than she used to be, but she is bound to become the heroine we all know and love.

Tomb Raider is set to be release on March 5th, 2013.
